Torrance Airport Noise and Training Flights to be Discussed and Decided Upon

Suggestions for reducing airport noise and training flights will be thoroughly discussed during the Tuesday, July 25 City Council meeting, beginning at 6:30 PM.

COTAR (Coalition for Torrance Airport Reform) and Homeowners groups urge a huge turnout by affected residents. The groups and residents support the City’s suggestions to charge landing fees, to enact a moratorium on more flight schools, and eliminate training flights in both north and south patterns.

Additionally, we propose that the Council defer action on the City’s Letter of Agreement (LOA) with the flight schools, because it is voluntary.

We suggest specific additional steps to restore balance between the airport and the community.

Please attend this very important meeting to urge City to stop unlicensed pilots from flying over our homes and schools.  It is noisy, dangerous, and polluting. Thank you!!

Did You Hear the Siren Sound?

On Thursday, July 6th at 10:00 am, the City of Torrance tested the recently upgraded outdoor sirens located throughout the City.

The Torrance Neighborhood Outdoor Warning Sirens (Torrance NOW) include a chime and text to voice announcement.  “This is a test, only a test…”
TorranceNOW includes eight sirens strategically located in the City at 6 fire stations, including station 4 in the Hollywood Riviera, Southeast Library, and one at the corner of Lomita Boulevard and Madison Street.

From the City of Torrance:
We would like to know where you were around that time and if you could hear the test. Please take this survey describing what you heard. We will use this survey to better understand the reach of these sirens.

TorranceNOW Sirens are part of the overall Torrance Community Warning System, which includes Torrance Alerts, Torrance Refining Company Siren, Crenshaw/Del Amo Barrier System, CitiSOUNDS radio, CitiCABLE, Emergency Alert System, and the recently tested Beach Emergency Evacuation Lights System (BEELS).

These sirens are designed for early warning to the community in the event there is a significant emergency requiring a call-to-action.

These new sirens are different from the one located and operated by the Torrance Refining Company.  The TRC siren is tested the first Wednesday of every month.
