Rocketship Park to usher in new playground equipment

Torrance Community Services Department wishes to consult with neighbors of Los Arboles (Rocketship) Park on prospective designs for new playground equipment.  One session was held today; another is scheduled for this Saturday at 10:00am at the park.  Please click on this information flyer for further information: LosArbolesPlayEquip_Feb2016 We learned at today’s session that the sand area around the famed rocketship and the ship itself will not be involved.  The effort is focused solely on replacing the play equipment zone: slides, swings, “moon lander”, etc.  Three options have been presented for consideration, each with different cost and usage considerations.  All new equipment will be built to ADA standards and sand replaced with new, resilient wood fiber material.  Designs will focus on the 2-5 and 5-12 age groups.  No restrooms, nor trees/foliage or shade structures are included.  Similar refurbishments can be seen and judged at Victor, Greenwood, Hickory, and McMaster Parks within Torrance.

Jason Minter, Sr Business Manager for Torrance Community Services Department, along with other city staff present options for new play equipment, Feb 18 2016.

Not fond of that buzz?

Feeling like that helicopter flew a little to close or a little too loud?  There is a comprehensive reporting system for helicopter noise which allows you to submit a complaint, effective here in the Riviera, and throughout the LA area.  This is a growing concern for many communities, especially those near airports.  You can use your home computer or download a smartphone app.  Click here for all the details.

Bad Traffic

Concerned about traffic through the South Bay and past the Riviera?  Tried getting to the freeway lately? Along with other news to share, we will have a guest from South Bay Cities Council of Governments, Jacki Bacharach.

She is very qualified and willing to get into the topic of traffic issues:   speeding  in our neighborhood, traffic density, the impact of proposed developments, the “long view” that the LA County and South Bay cities have for the PCH corridor, and what can we do to mitigate the amount or effect of traffic.
Jacki is the former mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes,  member of LA Metro,  LA Rail and is currently  a county commissioner.

Drive (or walk or bicycle or skateboard) on over Wednesday to learn more.

City Council Committee TREE AND VIEW ORDINANCE meeting!

On Thursday, January 14, at 7 PM,  residents will have a chance to testify before  the Torrance City Council Planning and Design Committee about the need for a tree and view ordinance.

This is the first of two meetings that residents, city staff and the RHA may speak directly before city council members on this issue.   This will probably be the last public meeting before the issue goes before the city council for a vote.

We know that the city staff is reluctant to take on the task of managing tree issues, so the staff report is likely to be very “anti-tree ordinance.”  This is why we need residents to speak directly to city council members to explain why we are  “pro ordinance.”   Let them know how view obstruction affects your property value, enjoyment of your home, relations with neighbors, etc. etc.  The RHA feels that there needs to be a process to resolve these disputes, and an ordinance is the best way.

If you feel that view obstruction from trees is important to you, then please come to City Hall, 3031 Torrance Blvd., to the city council chambers at 7:00 PM on Thursday night and (within your allotted 3 minutes) explain your point of view (no pun intended)!!!!!

If you cannot attend the meeting(s) please make your concerns known to the Torrance City Council members via email (click here for email addresses) or voicemail.
