Torrance Airport Noise and Training Flights to be Discussed and Decided Upon

Suggestions for reducing airport noise and training flights will be thoroughly discussed during the Tuesday, July 25 City Council meeting, beginning at 6:30 PM.

COTAR (Coalition for Torrance Airport Reform) and Homeowners groups urge a huge turnout by affected residents. The groups and residents support the City’s suggestions to charge landing fees, to enact a moratorium on more flight schools, and eliminate training flights in both north and south patterns.

Additionally, we propose that the Council defer action on the City’s Letter of Agreement (LOA) with the flight schools, because it is voluntary.

We suggest specific additional steps to restore balance between the airport and the community.

Please attend this very important meeting to urge City to stop unlicensed pilots from flying over our homes and schools.  It is noisy, dangerous, and polluting. Thank you!!

Did You Hear the Siren Sound?

On Thursday, July 6th at 10:00 am, the City of Torrance tested the recently upgraded outdoor sirens located throughout the City.

The Torrance Neighborhood Outdoor Warning Sirens (Torrance NOW) include a chime and text to voice announcement.  “This is a test, only a test…”
TorranceNOW includes eight sirens strategically located in the City at 6 fire stations, including station 4 in the Hollywood Riviera, Southeast Library, and one at the corner of Lomita Boulevard and Madison Street.

From the City of Torrance:
We would like to know where you were around that time and if you could hear the test. Please take this survey describing what you heard. We will use this survey to better understand the reach of these sirens.

TorranceNOW Sirens are part of the overall Torrance Community Warning System, which includes Torrance Alerts, Torrance Refining Company Siren, Crenshaw/Del Amo Barrier System, CitiSOUNDS radio, CitiCABLE, Emergency Alert System, and the recently tested Beach Emergency Evacuation Lights System (BEELS).

These sirens are designed for early warning to the community in the event there is a significant emergency requiring a call-to-action.

These new sirens are different from the one located and operated by the Torrance Refining Company.  The TRC siren is tested the first Wednesday of every month.

For more information about sirens go to www.TorranceCA.Gov/TorranceNOW or see below.

A Delicias afternoon

The neighbors of the Lower Riviera had a long-awaited block party on Paseo de las Delicias on Saturday, June 17. About 100 neighbors and friends gathered to share lunch and enjoy the closed street.

“We have been talking about doing this for years, and had a great time. It was great to get to know some of the new neighbors who moved in during COVID, and see people connect. We hope to do something similar again soon, like an ice cream social or happy hour. We are already planning for another block party next year” said Steve Gerhardt, one of the event organizers.

Why not try it on your block?

Here are a few photos from the afternoon.

URGENT REMINDER! Council’s Transportation Meeting Wednesday, April 12th, 6PM!

Again, we would like to urge you all to attend the second Transportation Committee meeting regarding the Airport Traffic Wednesday. At the first meeting in December, the pilots vastly outnumbered the residents. We need to show ourselves if we have any hope of a successful outcome.

If you want to speak, you will have one minute, but just showing up and supporting our community is vital and will be appreciated. Let’s pull together as a community. You will not regret the time spent on this important issue!

Please attend and WEAR RED to show support. See the details in our last post for where and when.

Thank you!
