Please email your opinion on the Airport Noise issue to City Council by November 1st!

STILL BOTHERED  BY AIRPORT NOISE?

There will be a public hearing to discuss the operation and results of the Airport Noise Monitors and the GENERAL OPERATIONS AND NOISE LEVEL OF THE AIRPORT at the City Council Meeting at City Hall, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday evening, at 6:30 PM on November 8.  This date has not yet been confirmed. We will probably not know the exact date until November 1 (the date they are legally required to post the agenda).   We know that the proposed meeting night, November 8,  is midterm election night, but if you are concerned about Airport Noise, this is the time to show up.

Zamperini Field (Torrance Municipal Airport)

If you wish to speak, you will be given only 1 minute at the mic, so prepare what you want to say. You do not have to speak. Your presence at the meeting will speak volumes for you. Even better, write an email addressed to CouncilMeetingPublicComment@TorranceCA.gov
about your specific issue (“I can’t garden when the planes are flying, I work at home and the airport noise is very distracting“, etc.) If you don’t have any idea of what to write, refer to our Torrance Airport Issues page where you can read the October 12 Letter to City Council , which has suggestions for how the council can address this issue. The Airport Noise Petition (on the same page) has a list of grievances from residents. Both of these are a good source for inspiration. It’s best to send your letter to council as soon as possible to make sure it gets there in time to be included in the information packet to council members.
We need a lot of concerned residents at this meeting to urge the City Council to enforce the Torrance Municipal Code regarding the airport. Public controversy and knowledgeable opposition are the best tools we have to make a change. Please come down to City Council chambers at 3031 Torrance Blvd. on Nov. 8, and bring a friend! No signs will be allowed in the building. We will publish the updated meeting date and time as soon as we find out what they are.

Thank you! See you there, Judy Brunetti, RHA Co-President

October General Meeting cancelled

Due to a last-minute schedule conflict involving Chief Hart, the Tuesday Oct 4 in-person RHA meeting at Riviera  Methodist Church has had to be cancelled.   Stay tuned for a new date when we can hear from and meet with Chief Hart (and each other) in person.

The RHA regrets unintentionally scheduling the Oct 4 meeting at the culmination of the Jewish High Holidays.  The scheduling was an oversight and the RHA wishes everyone in the Jewish community a peaceful and prosperous New Year and a meaningful Yom Kippur.

WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED EARLY

Information from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California – “Today (9/19/22), the MWD has successfully completed the water pipeline repair. Outdoor watering may resume, consistent with the City of Torrance’s Level 1 conservation restriction.”

Reminder of Level 1 Restrictions for Torrance, here.

Thanks to all of you who cared about your community and participated in this effort to ensure enough water was available for Health and Emergency situations during this repair, and good work for MWD in finishing ahead of schedule.

SPECIAL LAST MINUTE CITY COUNCIL MEETING (LIVE), MONDAY SEPTEMBER 19TH, 8AM!

This just came to our attention. A special City Council meeting has been scheduled for the issue: “Recommendation of the City Clerk that the City Council consider the removal of Shamindra Manbahal from the Civil Service Commission.”

BACKGROUND: On Sept. 13, Mayor Chen broke the City’s 25 + years’ tradition by unilaterally, without input from Council or the public, appointing Mr. Manbahal as Commissioner.

You can view the 9/13 City Council meeting and decision in question on this link.  The discussion on the action item begins at the 2 hour & 20 minute mark.

Written comments must be submitted ASAP by emailing CouncilMeetingPublicComment@TorranceCA.Gov
and writing “Public Comment” in the subject line.

You can view any live City Council meeting by clicking on the link found here.

Planning Commission Appeal for Gun Shop on 9/21

The community development director for the city of Torrance has approved a new gun shop, Red Rifle, to be located at 1325 Sartori Ave in Downtown Torrance.

Red Rifle is currently operating in Carson

The Planning Commission will be hearing an appeal for the proposed gun shop on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:30 PM. The meeting will take place in the City Council Chamber at 3031 Torrance Blvd. starting at 6:30 p.m. It is not available for remote viewing. Four residents who filed the appeal will be speaking.

Opponents of the gun shop argue that the proposed location is 1/2 mile from Torrance High and Nativity School and they have cited that there are already 2 gun shops within a mile of this location. If you agree, you can sign a petition to block the approval here.

If you would like to show support for either side of this issue, you are encouraged to attend but are asked to be respectful and professional, as we are all a part of the community.
