See the new Temporary Housing Village

In June 2021, Torrance City Council approved a temporary housing program for people experiencing homelessness in Torrance for a pilot period of 12 months. Please stop by and learn more about the program, 3290 Temporary Housing Village at Civic Center Drive. The Village will offer transitional housing for individuals experiencing homelessness along with wraparound services in the form of case management and housing navigation. It’s set to open next month. Harbor Interfaith Services, the service provider, will be available to answer any questions. For questions contact Torrance City Hall (310) 618-5880.

Coyotes and Us

Here’s some advice we can all take to minimize our interactions with these amazing, but sometimes threating, neighbors:

Visit the interactive Coyote Management Portal to learn more about urban coyote behavior and report coyote activity: TorranceCA.Gov/coyotes
For immediate assistance, call the 24-hour Coyote Hotline at (310) 618-3828.
If a coyote is behaving aggressively toward a human, please call 9-1-1.

Going for a walk?

  • Take a coyote deterrent such as a noise-maker or personal alarm.
  • Keep dogs on a short leash (6 feet or less).

Vote!

We’re in election season with important state and local elections upon us. The last day to vote is June 7, but mail-in voting is already available, and in-person voting begins this weekend.

This will be the first opportunity to vote for a City Council member from our new 5th District, encompassing the Hollywood Riviera and Southwood Riviera, instead of at-large. So your vote has even more weight — don’t hesitate!

The League of Women Voters has made available recordings of their recent forums where the candidates for local office were grilled on their positions. In the interest of informing you on the most local of these races, we pass along these links to view the recordings:

Ashai Project to be Redesigned

The Ashai development project, a multi-use office building and condo project, is going back to the drawing board. The directors of Ashai Development Corporation, Billy and Arthur Ashai, have confirmed that they are going to lower the height and scale of the project, to make it more compatible with the neighborhood.  The project is located at the corner of Via Valmonte and Hawthorne, on the border of the Riviera and Walteria areas.

Ashai Mixed-Use Development Project – original design concept

The redesign is a result of public opposition to the original large, 3-story plan seen above.  Residents wrote emails, called in to the Planning Division, and about 80 residents showed up to a public meeting in October at the Torrance Airport meeting room to state their opposition to the project. Thank you to everyone who voiced their opinion.

We’ll soon see what the new plans and the new silhouette look like. We’ll keep you posted!
